The Series

Echoes of Faith

Short Islamic studies courses for adults

Each course takes one important subject and studies it over a set number of weeks, with a clear beginning and end.

Semester One

From Memory to Meaning

The purpose of the course

Recite with understanding

These are the surahs you have recited since childhood. They are in every prayer, every witr, every night you could not sleep. You know the words. This course is about what the words are saying.

Over eight evenings we take Surah al-Fatihah and the last ten surahs one at a time, read them closely, and study them the way a class studies a text: line by line, with vocabulary, structure, and discuss the lessons that should come to mind in salah and daily life.

What students will learn

Understand the meaning

Know what each ayah is saying and the central message of every surah.

Recognize key words

Learn Qur’anic words and phrases that appear again and again.

See how the ayat connect

See how one ayah leads into the next and how the surah comes together as a whole.

Bring it into salah

Remember the meaning as you recite, so familiar surahs no longer pass by without thought.
